The STEAM Initiative is a newly formed 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on creating learning activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. We feel that STEAM learning activities provide key creative and analytical skills that form the basis of an entrepreneurial mindset. These skills are critical to lead innovation in 21st century global economy. Our approach is based on project oriented learning that defines a clear goal that will drive the learning process. We feel this format gives us an advantage in that along with the learning opportunity the participants are also working to achieve the project goal.
Joe Chavez, President
Personally, I’ve applied my computer science background to application domains such as business process automation, astronomy, gaming systems, mobile applications and wearable technology. On the technology side I was part of the NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope team as an engineer at the Spitzer Science Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. My artistic pursuits include the creation of art and music based on chaos theory. The genesis of the STEAM Initiative came from my 3rd year organizing and running Space Apps Reno. Universally the individuals and teams expressed and interest in continuing work on their projects. The STEAM Initiative will enable them to do so.
